Response Group design and manufacture the Stahler Wheel as an alternative to diffused aeration. Click on the video below to see the Stahler Wheel in action
The Stahler Wheel is installed in a conventional activated sludge system with activated sludge in the mixed liquor and a return sludge circuit between the aeration and FST. The Stahler Wheel is used for aeration and mixing of the tank, which replaces a diffused aeration system and mixer in a conventional system. The system also contains a fixed film element of treatment due to the specific construction of the media discs on the aerator pipes in the wheel. Therefore this system is a true hybrid system of activated sludge and fixed film in which the activated sludge dominates. For this reason, the system can operate at higher efficiencies than conventional activated sludge processes resulting in lower power consumption.
The basic construction of the wheel is a central shaft and a steel cage structure which transfers the forces directly to the bearings and thus the central shaft is significantly less stressed. The pipes are formed by joining discs into cylinders, with pipes specially arranged to create the Stahler Wheel. The pipes form hollow chambers which serve both, oxygen input and growth of the fixed film. The bearings are of simple construction and are self-lubricating by the mixed liquor. The motor is outside on top of the tank and the drive transmission is a chain in robust construction.
Response have provided many of these Stahler Wheels on our DBO Contracts (list of installations provided). The system is suitable for upgrading an existing activated sludge plant or for new builds.
Less Energy Consumption - Up to 40% less than SBR Process
Reduced Footprint-upto 50% less treatment volume
Combined Aeration & Mixing
Improved Sludge Quality
Less production of sludge
Slow speed operation reduces noise & odours
Variable speed motor controlled by DO
Additional pipes for increased air input
Concrete or steel tank construction
Package system incorporating pocket clarifiers (up to 250PE)
In smaller plants the Stahler Wheel can be installed in packaged plants (steel tanks) with final settlement tanks as static clarifiers in steel construction.
The wheel can be used in wastewater treatment plants of varying sizes (100PE – 40,000PE) and used for:-
Plants for elimination of carbonaceous components
Plants for nitrification
Plants for nitrification and simultaneous de-nitrification
Plants for nitrification /simultaneous de-nitrification and enhanced biological phosphorus uptake
